Policies: MATERIAL LENDING POLICY FOR THE KALKASKA COUNTY LIBRARY
1. Books, magazines, audiocassettes, compact discs and videos from the Kalkaska County Library will be lent for a period of two weeks. 2. Material may be renewed for a period of two weeks, with the exception of inter-loan material or material on reserve. 3. When a book has been overdue for one week, a notice shall be mailed to the card-holder listing the due date. A second notice will be mailed after an additional week listing the overdue books with a charge for replacement. There is a one dollar charge posted to the card-holder's account for each of these notices. 4. If there is no response to either notice, or the books remain overdue without explanation of hardship, the card-holder's account will be suspended until all books are returned. 5. A collection agency will assist the library in recovering overdue material and unpaid fines. A $10.00 fee will be charged to the patron's account to pay collection agency service charges. 6. Fines are 10 cents per day. The maximum fine on a single overdue item shall be two dollars. 7. When unpaid fines charged to a single card amount to more than six dollars, the use of the card is suspended. 8. A patron who is a chronic offender in such matters may have his case reviewed by the Library Board at the request of the Director and his/her card may be permanently revoked. 9. Fines may be rescinded or reduced at the discretion of the director due to extraordinary family or personal hardship. 10. Materials which have been lost or damaged must be replaced at the expense of the patron to whom they have been charged. These expenses shall include the current cost of the materials, plus two dollars for processing expense. If the cost is unavailable, $25.00 for a hard-bound and $7.00 for mass market paperback will be charged. Children's books will be less. 11. One week per year may be designated as a "free week" when overdue books may be returned without penalty. 12. A patron's initial library card is free, the cost of a replacement card is $2.00.
KALKASKA COUNTY LIBRARY INTERNET AND COMPUTER ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY: 1. In response to advances in technology and the changing needs of the community, the Kalkaska County Library endeavors to develop collections, resources and services that meet its cultural, informational, recreational and educational needs. It is within this context that the Kalkska County Library offers access to the Internet. 2. The Internet is a global electronic network. Resources available on the Internet supplement the collections of the Kalkaska County Library. The library does not monitor and has not control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. The resources available on the Internet may contain material of a controversial or inappropriate nature. Library users access the Internet at their own discretion and are responsible for any access points they reach. Please try to be tolerant and avoid sites that may make you or others uncomfortable. 3. The Kalkaska County Library provides some computers with filtering software to limit children's exposure to some web sites. The software blocks some sites that could be offensive to some users.iltering software does not block all material users might find offensive. Parents are responsible for supervising their children's Internet sessions. All children under the age of 18 years need parental permission to usethe library's computers to access the Internet. All people under the age of 18 years must use the computers with filtering software, unless their parents or guardians are present. This policy enables the library to comply with Public Act 212, effective October 1, 2000. 4. Web based email such as Yahoo Mail or Hot Mail is acceptable for use at the library. Sending email using the library's account and address is prohibited. 5. Chat rooms and games are prohibited. 6. Downloading is allowed to diskettes which will be provided at the circulation desk for a minimal charge. No software of diskette from home may be used, in order to prevent the spread of viruses which may contaminate the library systems. Downloading to a diskette is limited to the length of sign up time. Printing and downloading for the web is encouraged as long as it doesn't violate basic laws of copyright and plagiarism. There is a charge for printed material. 7. The Kalkaska County Library is not responsible for damage to a patron's disk or computer, or for any loss of data, damage or liability that may occur from patron use of the libray's computers. 8. The Kalkaska County Library's Internet access will not be used for any illegal activity such as hate mail, harassment, hacking, unsolicited advertising (spamming) or fraud. Acess to sites of an illegal nature is prohibited. 9. Any attempt to access the Kalkaska County Library network will be considered a violation of our acceptable use policy and will result in permanent loss of Internet access priviledges. Accessing sites with pornographic content will result in loss of Intenet access priviledges.
