Chairperson

Shelly Major has been on the Planning Commission since 1998.She worked for Forest Area Community Schools for 27 years in the transportation department and as teacher aide at the K-2 level.  She was injured at work and forced into early retirement.  Shelly also serves the township as Chairperson on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Shelly has 1 daughter, Regina (Patrick) Fransworth of Bear Lake and 2 granddaughters, Desiree` of Bear Lake, MI and Antonia of Harbor Beach, MI.

Bryan Moore has been a full time resident of the township for five years. His family have been land owners in Garfield and Orange Townships for almost 100 years. His grandmother still owns the old Perrin Schoolhouse where she and her husband both attended school in the 1920's. Many of Bryan’s fondest childhood memories are of mushrooming and river floats in Garfield Township.

His professional background is in the hotel industry. He has overseen as many as thirteen hotels in three states as a Director of Operations for different hospitality management companies. He is currently General Manager of the Courtyard by Marriott in Traverse City. In his current and past positions he commonly deals with zoning issues and local building ordinances. He also serves as a board member on the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau.

His interests include most outdoor activities but especially kayaking and hiking. He resides with his wife of 22 years and 2 black cats Arthur and Louis.

Click here to view full size picture Jean Stiehl moved from Livonia, Michigan to Fife Lake with her husband of 36 years, Charlie, in 1978.  They have 3 children that graduated from Forest Area Community Schools and attended Ferris and Central Universities.  The Stiehl's have owned and operated Stone Mountain Carpet Mills in the Fife Lake area since 1994.  Serving the township runs in the family. Charlie is a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee.

Click here to view full size picture Al Potts and his wife, Shirley, moved to Garfield Township in 1999, after he retired from a 30 year career as an engineer/manager with the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. They have a daughter, Kendra. He has a Bachelor of Science degree.
In addition to being a member of the Planning Commission, he is also Chairman of the Spring Clean-up Committee, Chairman of the Action Group and a trustee on the township board.
Al enjoys hiking, fishing and "working in the barn".
